They tend to not do very well, no. Most tend to turn toward what will ensure their own survival first, rather than what might be the rational or logical thing to do; it's easier to say from here what we think they should do, or perhaps ideally what we would do in their circumstances, but we have no way to really know how we would react ourselves unless we were put in that situation ourselves.
