That's a rather passive way of looking at it, isn't it? You make it sound as though their survival occurred through no doing of their own - as though they were acted upon by their circumstances, rather than choosing to act themselves.

"Survivor at a cost" removes all accountability from the one who lived. It's an interesting way of looking at it.
