I don't think fears are our own choice, who the hell chooses to be afraid of something? It's not predetermined, but I would think that getting the fear would come down to other people's choices, and getting over it would be what's your own choice.
People have a personality that'd send them one way or the other, but that's the most predetermined it gets.
