I'm going to be somewhat scarce today. It's someone's birthday — one of my valuables, a boy I cared about quite a bit. He's been gone a long time now.

I also think I've mentioned before that my birthday is tomorrow, back when we were exchanging ours, and if that's the case then I know it's sort of a moot point to tell you again because it's not as though you've forgotten the first time around. Still, it's tomorrow. I don't have any plans to rope you into entertaining me or anything like that, but this year I thought I'd try just...telling people, rather than dropping hints and trying to make them guess as a way of making myself feel important, so we'll see how that goes.

That's perfectly fine; I'm somewhat accustomed to people doing that sort of thing around important dates. I'm not going to run off or do anything out of the ordinary (the generally accepted definition of "ordinary", that is, not mine, as those tend to be two completely different things).

And I remember that, yes; while I appreciate the lack of being expected to serve as your own personal entertainment, I do have something for you that I imagine you'll find entertaining enough, if I know you at all.

Well, you do have a habit of making it hard to use standard social niceties on you. We already both know you didn't have to and you don't need much more motive than that you wanted to, anyway.

At the same time, it's not like you to approach things in this way.

In this case, at least, the fact that going about things the way I usually do would make me a hypocrite.

Even if it's a relatively minor thing to be hypocritical about, that doesn't make it any less worth it to try and change for the better.

Well, I'm not going to try to argue that; my tolerance for hypocrisy has always been incredibly low, after all.

I don't know if I like it yet. But I think I'll probably be the better for it in the long run.
