That sort of mindset is very similar to my own, back in my own world. I did a lot of work in the shadows myself - I accepted early on that if I died for my life's work, no one would know, and if they knew, that no one would care; even if I survived, no one would ever know the extent of what I had done. However, I would know what I had accomplished, and that was what mattered; more importantly, I would have an impact either way.
