My thoughts exactly, actually; it's plain that this world doesn't see the battling aspect as cruelty - if anything, everything about it encourages the battling, to say nothing of the fact that the Pokémon seem, for all intents and purposes, unable to die regardless of what one does to them. If they were normal animals, then yes, training them to...well, explode, for example, would surely be horribly cruel - but that's something that several species of these creatures learn to do on their own, and they rather seem to enjoy it besides.

Adapt and overcome, really. If one can do that, then excellent; otherwise...arguing or "getting up in arms," as you put it, is a largely pointless endeavor, I think.
