Ah, it seems that to a fair amount in this world, the soul is an abstract concept - something that may or may not exist, or is only believed in by the devoutly religious. That isn't so where I come from; the existence of one's soul isn't up for debate, as it has been proven without a shadow of a doubt to exist, and given the right circumstances it can continue to live on outside of one's body. Not in the form of a spectre or a ghost of some sort - such stories are nonsense - but in an actually tangible form regardless.
This would be how one would reanimate the corpses - or at least, that's how I'm assuming it works. I'm not entirely positive, as I never did get to witness them in action; I was brought to Johto before I could see them awakened.
