The last time we spoke, I believe I told you that we're expected to train those Pokémon of ours - to ensure they grow stronger. This world seems to revolve around these creatures; one's status tends to be linked with the strength of their Pokémon. This goes for those who were naturally from this world as well - in certain cities there are establishments called gyms; the Gym Leaders have been given the...rights, I suppose, to judge a trainer's skill by engaging them in battle. It's a test, I suppose, a rite of passage or somesuch; defeat the Gym Leader and receive some sort of badge from them. Collect all eight badges and receive the right to battle a group of individuals known as the Elite Four.

Supposedly, defeating the Elite Four will allow one to return home - or so the rumor goes.
