That's been my thought from the start. Whomever brought us here is intentionally keeping us in the dark in several ways, and it's very clear that whatever their intentions are, allowing us to leave through our own will plays no part in them. Believe me, I know a prison when I see one - this particular cage just has some strangely-decorated bars.

There are frequent mentions on the network of those that have "disappeared" - they vanish entirely from the system, their Gears become inaccessible and their numbers no longer work; for all intents and purposes, contact has been completely cut off. Some that I know have vanished in a similar manner. Though I haven't seen any particular pattern to these disappearances, I also don't know how long most of these people were here before it happened; the theory you've proposed might explain some of it, at least.
