I don't know that I would consider it to be in the same area; in our situation, these creatures are to be used for advancement in battle. The point is to strengthen them, in order to defeat particularly strong challengers in these 'gyms' and collect these badges we've been sent after. If the creature that has been captured is unable to do so, regardless of how much it loves and adores you, some would consider it acceptable to release them.
In the circumstances you've posed, on the other hand...well, there's not much excuse for that other than sadism.
