I'm honestly not the best person to ask in that regard - I won't call you stupid for a few reasons, the most prominent being that I don't understand it either.
What we understand as "God" back in Amestris is more or less the force that keeps everything in balance. A lot of what we do adheres to the principle of Equivalent Exchange - basically, you can't destroy something so thoroughly that you render it into absolutely nothing, nor can you create something from nothing (or insufficient materials). You can work with what already exists and what you add to something, whether it's energy or physical materials; you can't just pull materials out of the aether.
Once in a while, someone will attempt to create something without sufficient materials. This causes what we call a "rebound" - basically, it's the forces that be trying to stabilize themselves by taking what materials weren't provided, directly from the person trying to do the creating. The rebounds are considered by some to be God's work or God's interference. "God" as a whole is more or less what keeps our world together and prevents us all from doing something catastrophically idiotic; the life-force of the world, if you will.
From what I understand, it doesn't quite work that way in most other worlds; it seems that when most refer to "God" they're talking about some sort of specific being, which makes very little sense to me. I understand God as a force, not an actual definable entity. (Admittedly, we have Truth, which is both an actual entity and something else entirely; if I'm understanding correctly, Truth is the being that mediates between the human world and God's domain. But I'm not entirely sure if that's the case; that's only what I've been told.)
As for "God" being an actual being, though...I can't say for sure. We have a few gods that some believe in, but those followings are considered more cultlike than anything. Either cultlike or horribly backwards.
